Foreword

    "The ghosts of all the women you used to be are all so proud of who you have become."  Nikita Gill, British-Indian writer, artist and illustrator.  Born 1987. Extract from her book “Wild Embers” first published in 2017.

     This book provides a feast for both the eyes and mind.  It is a unique collection of creative responses to quotations from famous women. The book explores female energy and inspiration through the lens of contemporary artists from around the word. Each quote and image is accompanied by the artist´s narrative, exploring the motivation for their art and creativity.

    Why WOMEN? Well I hope, by publishing this book, that in some small way it helps to redress the balance of women´s under-representation in the art world.  The passage of time does not appear to be sufficient to shift entrenched attitudes that devalue women´s art. With this book we are taking a positive stance putting WOMEN squarely centre-stage, celebrating both our individuality and commonality.

     On viewing the work within, it is obvious that women succeed in so many different ways, we may not yet have gender equal representation in museums or galleries but persistence and success reveals itself on every page. There are those who quietly share their hidden triumphs or hard fought battles and those who shout loud their glorious achievements.

     This book is dedicated to the contemporary artists within, who have enriched our collective knowledge by sharing a part of themselves.  Nicola Wild

    “Los fantasmas de todas las mujeres que solías ser están muy orgullosos de en quién te has convertido.”  Nikita Gill, escritora, artista e ilustradora británica-india. Nació en 1987. Extracto de su libro "Wild Embers", publicado por primera vez en 2017.

     Este libro ofrece un festín para los ojos y la mente. Es una colección única de respuestas creativas a citas de mujeres famosas. El libro explora la energía femenina y la inspiración a través de la lente de artistas contemporáneas de todo el mundo. Cada cita e imagen está acompañada por la narrativa de la artista, explorando la motivación de su arte y creatividad.

     ¿Por qué MUJERES? Bueno, espero, al publicar este libro, que de alguna manera ayude a corregir el equilibrio de la baja representación de las mujeres en el mundo del arte. El paso del tiempo no parece ser suficiente para cambiar las actitudes arraigadas que devalúan el arte de las mujeres. Con este libro estamos adoptando una postura positiva que pone a las MUJERES en el centro del escenario, celebrando nuestra individualidad y comunidad.

     Al ver el trabajo en el interior, es obvio que las mujeres tienen éxito de muchas maneras diferentes, es posible que aún no tengamos una representación igualitaria de género en museos o galerías, pero la persistencia y el éxito se revelan en cada página. Hay quienes comparten silenciosamente sus triunfos ocultos o duras batallas y aquellas que gritan en voz alta sus gloriosos logros.

     Este libro está dedicado a las artistas contemporáneas que han enriquecido nuestro conocimiento colectivo al compartir una parte de ellas mismas. Nicola Wild

   In my artwork "Resabio de Conquista" I use America as the allegory of a woman who emerges after the clash o cultures that meant the conquest.  A figure that overcomes differences, the splendor of miscegenation understood as growth and joint learming.

  Victoria Ocampo set the blunt precedent that one can occupy the place that one decides to occupy, do what one wants to do, with conviction and effort but without asking permission. The key is having passion and the result is not as important as it is to engage in action.

     I have always tried to follow this premise: to be creative, in an honest, intimate and personal way, without subjecting my creative freedom to conveniences or fashiones.  I am dedicating my life to becoming what I have dreamed of being.  I hold,  with passion, my chosen destination.

    En mi obra "Resabio de Conquista" utilizo a América como la alegoría de una mujer que emerge después del choque de culturas que significó la conquista. Una figura que supera las diferencias, el esplendor del mestizaje entendido como crecimiento y aprendizaje conjunto.

   Victoria Ocampo sentó el precedente contundente de que uno puede ocupar el lugar que decide ocupar, hacer lo que quiera hacer, con convicción y esfuerzo pero sin pedir permiso. La clave es tener pasión y el resultado no es tan importante como participar de esa acción.

     Siempre he tratado de seguir esta premisa: ser creativa, honesta, íntima y personal, sin someter mi libertad creativa a conveniencias o modas. Dedicar mi vida a convertirme en lo que he soñado ser. Sostener, con pasión, el destino elegido.
